The Colosseum is a huge structure built by decree of Emperor Va-Taraq for the people of Karath-din. The battleground itself is a small raised pier in the center of the flooded arena which was lit, either through magic or stage effects, with flames floating on the surface of the water. Combatants entered by crossing a narrow bridge extending from the main building. Here, they would compete against one another and occasionally fight captive wild animals for prizes of gold.[1]

Following Va-Taraq's death, his son, Va-Toran, ordered the building to be locked for one year and one day as a gesture of mourning.[2] A large primitive motor would retract the bridge via a rack and pinion mechanism when not in use, and the lever used to operate this mechanism was placed inside Va-Taraq's tomb. Although certain officials believed this to be part of a money making scheme, it is never made clear how Va-Toran was to profit from it.[3]

Recent Developments[]

When Garrett first explores the Lost City, the stands are partially covered with rock and lava is pooling in the arena floor. A strip of igneous rock connects the battleground to the sideline on the north, effecting a passage to the Tower. The arena is not accessible in T2, but the stairs and front entrance have been cleared.

The emperor supposedly had a private balcony above the bridge, but nothing can be found among the ruins which fits the description. A windowed triangular room to one side of the main hallway may be the location mentioned, although it is not directly above the bridge and is not technically a balcony. A small balcony is revealed in TG, but does not have a view of the arena and appears to be inside the building.
