The Talismans, or Elemental Talismans, are a set of four magical "keys" that alone can unlock the wards placed on The Haunted Cathedral. The Keepers scattered the talismans in and across The City in two (four in Thief Gold) different locations and recorded their location on the talisman map table in case they would ever need to reopen the cathedral.[1]

Talisman of Earth[]
In Thief Gold the Talisman of Earth is kept in the towering compound of the Hand Brotherhood somewhere outside The City. Garrett retrieves this talisman in the mission "The Mage Towers", by navigate the four elemental towers, starting with the water tower. The strength of the mages' magic and the confusing and complicated design of the compound made the retrieval of this talisman extremely difficult. (In Thief: The Dark Project the Talisman of Earth was held in the Hammer Temple located in Downtowne along with the Talisman of Air, which Garrett retrieves in the mission "Undercover".)
Talisman of Fire[]
The Talisman of Fire was concealed at the top of an old tower deep within the City of Karath-din. As the last staircase collapsed long ago, it was only accessible by using a Rope Arrow at the exterior ledge. The state of the city's deterioration and lava flows of the caverns combined with the fact that almost no one in the City even knew of the existence of the Lost City made this an ideal hiding spot for the talisman.
Talisman of Water[]
In Thief Gold, the Talisman of Water was hidden in a cavern under Old Quarter that was rigged by the Keepers with multiple tricks and traps. Unfortunately, this was the least effective of the four hiding places, and the talisman of water was eventually discovered by Captain Colliard and his man and brought to Lady Valerius in the Opera House. (The Talisman of Water in Thief: The Dark Project was hidden at the bottom of a flooded chasm in the burial chamber of Va-Taraq. It was retrieved in the mission "The Lost City" together with the Talisman of Fire.)
Talisman of Air[]
The Talisman of Air was held in the Hammer Temple located in Downtowne by the Hammerites. Garrett retrieves it in the mission "Undercover" while being disguise as a novice.

- In Thief Gold, the Earth Talisman is the only one kept outside of the city, and (along with the Air Talisman) guarded by a sect, yet neither the Hand Brotherhood nor the Hammerites appear to know of the Keepers presence.
