Soulforge Cathedral was the primary base and center of innovation of the Mechanists. Unlikely most of the other Cathedral's and Temples, Soulforge's primary focus appeared to be manufacturing and was mostly a large factory with little in the way of normal trappings expected in a place of worship.

Bays[]

Bay A[]

Smelter

Smelter Pool

Factory Bay A is the main part of the first room seen when entering the Cathedral. From it, Bay's B and C, as well as the South Apse connected to make a rough cross shape. It's main contents is the Rolling Machine but also contains a smelting Pool, and an unknown Machine. By the time Garrett arrives, the area has a fair amount of grass due to Viktoria's involvement.

Bay D[]

Factory Bay D is a small-ish area north-West of Bay E and south of the Fluid-vaper Interchange area. While it is smaller (if you count Bays A - C as part of the same area) it contains both the Linking Machine and the Sealing Machine. There also appears to be a recycling smelter pool.

Bay E[]

Factory Bay E is a large plus shaped room in the centre of Soulforge. It includes the Fusing Machine.

Plans Room[]

Plans Room

Plans Room

The plans room is a fair sized room in the north-west of Soulforge and contains a number of safes. The safes contain a number of plans for various Mechanist equipment. Plans include Flares, Mines, Scouting Orbs and Regulating rounds for the Guiding Beacon. In the centre of the room, there is a secret door which leads to a private desk belonging to Karras, where he has the latest draft page for The New Scripture of The Master Builder. Either side of the room are small office spaces.

Signal Room[]

Signal Room

Signal Room

The Signal Room can be found on the 3rd floor of the Northern Apse. It features a gate barring the entrance which seems to be only able to be opened from the inside (though the Alcoves ledges can be used to gain entrance). The main feature of the Room is the Signal Generator itself, which can hold two beacons labelled as A and B. At all times, the beacon inserted into A is for giving Karras' orders to the Servants but B can have a Guiding Beacon installed which will bring the Servants back to Soulforge for 'upgrades' if needed.

Healing Font[]

Soulforge Font

Healing Font

On the higher (2nd) level of Soulforge, in the centre next near Bay E, there is a healing Font inside a circular space.

Signal Towers[]

SignalTower

Signal Tower

At various parts of the roof around Soulforge are the Signal Towers. These are large radio-like towers which were used to broadcast signals all over the City to control the Masked Servants. These were connected to a Signal Room on the 3rd floor of the North Apse where the Signal is generated from. Each Tower has switch at the base which will dictate if it'll listen Slot A or Slot B beacon in the Signal Room. However, it appears that in position B, it'll sent both A and B signals (See Notes in Signal Tower).

Security[]

The cathedral was filled with all manner of Mechanist machines and security devices and was populated entirely by the Builder's Children, namely Combat Bots, Worker Bots, and Spider Bots, except for a few bloodstained Masked Guards who were ordinary Mechanist Mace Guards that were possibly a bit too slow to follow Karras' orders.

Story[]

At the end of Thief II: The Metal Age Karras created a protective chamber inside of Soulforge Cathedral and remained there secured in this room. As his plan drew near to completion, he had a complex lock of valves on the main Cathedral door to make it airtight. After Garrett managed to retrieve a rust gas container and a Cultivator it was learned that he planned to destroy all organic live by using the Masked Servants while being protected inside of his airtight cathedral.

The final fight between Viktoria and Combat Bots

Viktoria infiltrated Soulforge in an attempt to stop Karras from releasing the rust gas into The City. When Garrett learned that she had went ahead to attack the Cathedral alone, he immediately went to try to help her but it was too late as Viktoria drew too much attention to herself and in desperation was forced to sacrifice herself to generate enough plant life inside the cathedral to destroy everything from within. Garrett, following the plan to bring back the masked servants inside the cathedral was eventually successful in penetrating the stronghold and activating the beacon, which drew the masked servants back to Soulforge, and the rust gas was released inside the cathedral instead killing Karras and destroying his metal robots.[1]

Trivia[]

  • Karras added a system of speakers so that he could communicate with everyone inside the cathedral and was possible also able to "see" by using the Watcher.[2]
  • It is rumoured that by Thief: Deadly Shadows, Soulforge was still standing, but as a decaying ruin.[3]
