Garrett
Sabotage at Soulforge is the fifteenth and last mission in Thief II: The Metal Age. Garrett must sabotage Karras' plan to destroy all life and organic matter in The City.
Overview[]
The true nature of Karras' scheme has been revealed: he has installed a Cultivator in each Masked Servant and placed them in the homes of the wealthy, especially those with extensive gardens. When Karras gives a beacon signal from Soulforge Cathedral, the servants will release 'Rust Gas' that both kills and feeds off of organic matter; a chain reaction will begin, multiplying the volume of gas, finally consuming the whole City and destroying all life, bringing about Karras' dream of a world of machinery; Karras, in order to survive the planned destruction and as a result of his ever increasing repulsion by organic life, has sealed himself into an impregnable control room deep within the cathedral. Viktoria suggests that Garrett can break into Soulforge, activate the guiding beacon and order the servants back to the air-tight cathedral before the gas release, backfiring the plan on Karras when he is residing safe in Soulforge. Garrett, however, believes that her plan is suicide and refuses. Later, though, he encounters Artemus, who tells Garrett that Viktoria has begun an assault on Soulforge anyway. He rushes to Viktoria's aid but she is being attacked by mechanical beasts. Realizing that there is not enough plant life in the cathedral to sustain the chain reaction, Viktoria sacrifices herself, filling the whole cathedral with large vines. Garrett attempts to carry out her plan and avenge her death.
Objectives[]
- Sabotage Karras's plan by using the Guiding Beacon to draw the Servants to the Mechanist cathedral. First you must learn how to use the Guiding Beacon.
- Don't let Karras find out what you are up to, or he won't trigger the Servants.
- When the rest of your goals are accomplished, get outside before Karras seals up the cathedral and detonates the Servants.
Later objectives (after acquiring the Papyrus with instructions on how to assemble the Guiding Beacon):
- Follow the Guiding Beacon Blueprints to manufacture a new one for yourself.
- Connect the Guiding Beacon you made to Signal Slot B.
- Adjust at least 5 of the 8 Signal Towers to use Signal B, the Guiding Beacon, instead of Signal A, Karras's instructions. (Normal)
- Adjust at least 6 of the 8 Signal Towers to use Signal B, the Guiding Beacon, instead of Signal A, Karras's instructions. (Hard)
- Adjust at least 7 of the 8 Signal Towers to use Signal B, the Guiding Beacon, instead of Signal A, Karras's instructions. (Expert)[1]

Storyline Characters[]
Difficulty Alterations[]
The number of Signal Tower needed to turn to Signal B increases with each difficulty setting and some instructions on how to operate the machines are less clear.
Aftermath[]
Karras gives the signal for the servants to begin releasing the Rust Gas, only to discover that they have returned to the cathedral. It is too late to stop them, and the chamber quickly fills with gas, killing him and causing all the mechanical beasts to malfunction.
Walkthrough[]
Secrets[]
Easter Eggs[]
- Place a combat bot boiler and Steel Plate into the Rolling Machine in Bay A and push the button. Repeat this process five times and a scroll of developer quotes is "manufactured".[2]
Notes[]
- This mission is the first time Karras is seen in-game (non-cutscene). He can be found in his protective chamber but still talks to the player trough the speakers.
- The objective about not allowing Karras to discover the plan cannot be failed, even when the Guiding Beacon, or a partially assembled version, is placed at the window before him. This might suggest that the mission is rushed.
- This mission has more robots than any other level, and Karras is the only "human" in Soulforge except for the Masked Guards).
