“ | Break into a guarded mansion, steal another fat nobleman's priceless trinket, and leave quietly. | ” |
— Garrett |
Lord Bafford's Manor is the second mission of Thief: The Dark Project and Thief Gold, and the first real mission after the tutorial mission. It is set in and around Lord Bafford's Manor.
The mission comprises the entire manor (three floors plus vaults and cellar) with some surrounding streets. The mission starts on the streets near the front gate of the manor. Note that on Normal difficulty it is only necessary to pick up the scepter to complete the mission. On higher difficulties it is also necessary to leave the mansion.
Mission Background[]
Some time after leaving the Keepers, Garrett takes a simple job: "Break into a guarded mansion, steal another fat nobleman's priceless trinket and leave quietly" (just how long it has been since Garrett's training is never stated, but the kind of job he is willing to attempt and the connections he has made suggest he has established himself in the meantime). Garrett's task, given by his fence Cutty, is to steal a valuable scepter from a large manor while the master is away.
Objectives[]
- Sneak into Lord Bafford's manor and case the place. The well house in back is your best bet, if you can get the key from the guard - blackjacking or pickpocketing him would be quietest.
- Find Lord Bafford's prized jeweled scepter, and redistribute it... to yourself. Try to do it without causing too much commotion.
- In addition to pinching the scepter, steal 350 worth of valuables while you're in the manor. (Hard)
- Don't kill any of the servants; they're harmless. (Hard)
- In addition to pinching the scepter, steal 700 worth of valuables while you're in the manor. (Expert)
- Don't kill anyone while you do the job. No servants, no guards, no pets... no one. (Expert)
- Once you've achieved your other objectives, get out of the manor house and back to the city streets. (Hard/Expert)

Notes:
The Guards at the front gate are not hostile to Garrett unless he remains in the front gate area after they order him to leave or is hostile to them.
Guards and servants won't bother Garrett on the streets unless he is hostile to them.
Drunk Guards are less aware of their surrounding and will not attack Garrett when they see him but will become hostile when he attacks them or when other guards start attacking him. (The guard guarding the wellhouse will also become hostile when Garrett tries to take his key were he can see it.)
The guard patrolling the street will become hostile when he spots Garrett inside the wellhouse.
Storyline Characters[]
Hal and Joss in the basement (only mentioned in an unused conversation).[1]
Difficulty Alterations[]
There are no changes in the level's structure throughout the different difficulty settings. Thee more Bafford Sword Guards are added to the second floor on Hard and Expert, two of which guard the archers at the front hall and one patrols the southern halls. On Normal difficulty, an extra throne room key can be found in Bafford's bedroom, making it possible to acquire this key without pick-pocketing a Sergeant.
Walkthrough[]
Loot List[]
There is a total of 1429 loot in this mission where 914 are in gold, 250 in gems and 265 in goods.
Secrets[]
- The Spider cave in the waterway beneath the well house.
- A secret passage from the rooftop gardens to the throne room, behind a Bafford banner on the south east side.
See the narrated walkthrough for more info.
Tips[]
- Don't break into the mansion through the front gate but take the normal route through the well house. The guards at the front are tougher than the ones inside the mansion, one of them is an archer, and the portcullis needs some time to rise.
- Don't be alarmed when caught inside the mansion. Bafford Sword Guard's are slow and they are easy to hide from. Take caution however to not get spotted by the Sergeants around the throne room area because they will not give up so easily.
- The Sergeant in the throne room will first sound the alarm if he spots Garrett which will alert the other Sergeant(s).
- The secret passage from the rooftop gardens to the throne room offers a more sneaky way to the scepter and a better position against the Sergeant. Some care needs to be taken as not to slip from the wooden beams however.
- There is an arrow cache on the streets that is marked on the map.
- If playing on Hard and Expert, open the norther side gate when passing near it for not needing to wait for it to open when leaving the mansion in case of an emergency.
Trivia[]
- The Guards at the front gate will threaten Garrett when he gets near and after a warning they will attack.
- A Flash Bomb can be thrown at the guards on the street (or the Drunk Guard inside the mansion) without them becoming hostile.
- At the start of this mission, a servant walks from the streets trough the front gate, southern hallway, dining hall and kitchen and joins the other two servants in their quarter.
