The Mage Towers is the informal name used to refer to a compound located outside the City and where the Hand Mages lived and practiced their elemental magic in near isolation. Each tower was the corners of the fortifications to the compound and central keep.
Despite the extreme powers wielded by The Brotherhood Mages, a private security force is employed, lead by Captain Regalio. A full service staff is also employed for the care and maintenance of the compound. The employees movements are restricted, however, as not even the guard can enter the Towers beyond the foyer.[1] The staff were under strict rules, where punishments included death.[2]
The Grounds[]
The Mages reside in a large complex of towers surrounded by four massive stone walls. It consists of five primary structures: the elemental towers of Fire, Air, Earth, and Water; and the central Keep. The four elemental towers are located in the four corners of the compound's rectangular perimeter. On the North wall of the compound is the Main Gate, through which Garrett enters at the start of the mission.
The grounds are divided into four quadrants. Within each are an entry point to an elemental tower as well as small hedge mazes. The Southeast quadrant has a hidden trapdoor entrance to the underground treasury, concealed in the grassy path of a maze.
The Northern and Southern halves of the grounds are divided by stairwells branching off from the Keep. There is a small treasury located between Southeast and Southwest quadrants. Two bow guards are stationed at the doors on all difficulty levels.
The grounds are patrolled by Mages of all four elements as well as sword guards.
Much of the grounds are steeped in complete darkness and are covered by grass, making undetected travel easy.
The Keep[]
The central structure of the compound is the keep, in which the Hand Mages conduct elemental research as well as chemical and animal experiments.[3] A stony, three-story building clad in a red terracotta roof, the inside is spacious and lit dimly by candles and torches; much of the first and second floors are steeped in shadow; and flooring is predominantly of stone and wood, making undetected exploration relatively easy. The keep is topped by a huge tower which houses the Talisman of Earth.
The ground floor of the keep opens to a large foyer on the Northern end with two sweeping stone ramps leading upstairs. A hallway connects several storage rooms and the primary level of the library on the Southern end. A central stairwell provides access to all the floors of the keep. Mage activity on this floor is sparse save for the library, the main areas being occupied by sword guards and servants.
The second floor is dominated by a vaulted common room with large pillars and two wooden tables. The upper portion of the foyer is flanked by guard posts at which bow guards are stationed. The top floor of the library is to the South, which contains the scroll informing Garrett of the location of the Talisman of Earth, and other details about events at Mage Towers.[4] Access to the exterior grounds via stairs is found on the East and West sides. Sword guards, bow guards, and Air Mages patrol this floor thoroughly.
On the third floor are dormitories for the guards and servants. A wide central corridor connects these with Captain Regailo's chamber to the South, where the Captain keeps the Medallion of St. Burringden, and an observation room is to the North, flanked by two other large rooms. Two sword guards and one bow guard patrol up and down the corridor and the observation room, while some of the dorm rooms are occupied by servants.
Beyond a locked door at the top of the stairwell is another stairwell leading to the Central Tower, a cavernous stone room clad with marble flooring housing the Earth Talisman as well as several other valuable antiquities. Two Earth Mages are stationed in this room, and a Fire Mage patrols the tiled stairs leading to the treasure chamber. The treasure chamber contains seven other dummy Earth Talismans which attack would-be thieves, but a poetic verse found in a book in the ground floor library clues Garrett in to which among the eight is the authentic Earth Talisman.[5]
The base of the Central Tower has four walkways suspended over the grounds which lead to the upper levels of the Elemental Towers. Each walkway is guarded by one bow guard and one sword guard.
The lowest level of the keep contains two laboratories and a dungeon on the North side, furnished with torture devices. A secret door at the far end of the dungeon reveals Garrett's escape route: a large sewer tunnel connecting the Mage Towers to the City. On the Southern end of the dungeon, another secret door can be found, giving access to a hidden treasury. In the ceiling of the treasury is a trap door leading up to the Southeast quadrant of the grounds, providing an easy avenue for undetected entry into the keep. The dungeon and laboratory areas are patrolled by a sword guard and a bow guard. One sword guard watches the sewer tunnel.
Also found on this level is the lower library, entered via the ground floor library.
The Elemental Towers[]
There are four Elemental towers, each lining up with one of the four classic Elements of Earth, Air, Fire and Water. Each tower is primary filled with members belonging to that elemental order. As a rule, all non-mages are not allowed to venture into the towers as they are full of dangers relating to that element and are believed Sacrosanct by the mages. However, Guards are allowed into the foyers on business.[1]
Lt. Scarle was ordered not to go into the Fire Tower and was burnt alive because of the dangers inside.[6] As well as hazards of a more 'natural' nature, the towers also feature other dangers such as Elementals relating to the element. At the time of Garrett's visit, the Water Tower had been closed due to flooding which was created due to an experiment by Archmage Jabu Ibn Lani involving Water Elementals.[4]
At Night, all four towers are locked and unlocked via the Elemental Tower Keys which may only be used to open the towers in a prescribed order.[7] Each order has a different order's key in order to promote a degree of trust between the mages.
The Fire Tower has 6 floors, the Air has 5, the Earth has 7 and the Water has 2, each starting with a generic foyer area.
Water Tower[]
The Water Tower is flooded due to an experiment using water elementals going wrong. After the foyer, it is a large open water area with a small rock platform at the top with a small 'air gap' leading to a metal grating roof. It is on this platform that the Earth Tower key is located. Unlike the other towers, there is no door at the top to the main tower, but it should be noted that the tower extends higher then accessible and the door would be located above the grating if it did exist. It is unclear how this area looked before the flooding.
Earth Tower[]
After the Foyer, the Earth Tower opens to a large rocky area with floating rock platforms. After moving up, there is another large floor which is made into a minor rock maze leading up to another floor which has the upper exit to the tower, leading to the main center tower. There are two floors above that with rock formed rooms, and above that another large area taking up two floors. From the upper floor, a hole leads to the floor below and the storage place for the Air Tower Key.
Air Tower[]
Above the Air Tower Foyer is a open double floor, with the upper being a rim around the edge of the room, with a ceiling supported on pillars. A floating platform goes up to the next floor, where there is an outer rim cutting two large circular rooms, leading to a large central air lift. The Upper exit of this leads to a series of large hollow rooms with a few floating platforms and standing rock platforms. After going through these, it leads to a next floor, which features a large observatory space over two floors and contains the Fire Tower Key.
Fire Tower[]
Upon exiting the Foyer of the Fire Tower, the area is a large lava floor with a series of noisy metal platforms taking up two floors in an open plan design. The upper floor also features some Metal platforms which get hot intermittently. This leads up to the next floor which contain a series of large metal rooms. After this leads to the next floor which is large inner space with a outer ring leading to the next floor. The next floor is another large space with a lava floor and metal walkways, this one taking up 3 floors. The lowest floor has the exit door to the main tower while the top floor has a door which leads up some stairs to the top floor. This is a another lava floor but with rocks and a rock walkway, which at one time contained the key to the Water tower but due to the flooding, contains the key to the main tower.
