The insect swarm is a group of small flies which are circling around a specific spot while continuously buzzing in Thief: The Dark Project, Thief Gold and Thief II: The Metal Age. They can be passed through without hindrance but do a periodical one point of damage to any living creature that stands within their area for longer then a few seconds. When Garrett stands into one, a short insect sound is heard followed by a stinging sound when an attack occurs.
They are usually a standalone feature just circling their area, sometimes above something rotten like a Corpse, but in one case they are seen circle around a moving Zombie in the mines of Cragscleft which is one of the only times where they are mobile. In both cases, they are a permanent swarm unless dissipated with a Water, Fire or Gas Arrow or the explosion from a Mine or Gas Mine (can be triggered by an arrow or any other moving object) though this is often unnecessary. Another temporary form is created by the impact of a bugbeast's shot which disappear after several minutes but behave no different than the stationary variant.

Tips[]
- It is advised to simply go around them but when this is not possible they should be ran through as quickly as possible or dissipated to avoid damage.
- They can be used as a trap because they attack any living creature which stands in their area.
