Glyph statues are one of several forms of stone statues that are given life by The Hag using Glyphs. Their intelligence is limited, patrolling set areas under simple instructions to attack anything they see, or to investigate any loud Sounds. Though they are able to speak their speech is fragmentary and simple, repeating simple statements repeatedly concerning whatever they happened to be doing at the time.[1] However, they are not to be underestimated. The statues are very strong and are able to break a great speed if alerted, making them quite a formidable opponent to deal with.

Story[]

During Garrett's investigations into Keeper Orland as the possible "Brethren and Betrayer" near the end of the mission "Of Brethren... And Betrayers", in the hall of statues, a then-unknown hag brings the statues to life using Glyphs and commanded them to locate and kill Garrett.[2]

They can later be found guarding the Builder's Chalice and the Jacknall's Paw in a Hidden Lair and on The City's streets after the mission "Still Life with Blackjack".

Appearance[]

Human Statue[]

The Human Statue appears as a bearded human male, wearing robes like those found on aristocratic people.

Gargoyle[]

The Gargoyle appears a as vaguely gargoyle shaped statue, with a bat-like face, claws and two-toed feet, though lacking the wings of their static counterpart.

Strategy[]

Prior to obtaining the Glyph of Unbinding, a glyph statue can better be avoided if possible, as most Weapons are ineffective at damaging them, and those that are able to harm them may require many hits, as the statues have a large amount of hit points.

  • Fire Arrows – two direct hits are required
  • Explosive Mines – one is sufficient if detonated directly under the statue
  • Moss Arrows - can drastically reduce a statue's speed, but are not entirely reliable

After obtaining the Glyph of Unbinding - A stone statue can be taken out with a single stealthy hit with the Blackjack to the back of the head, causing the statue to stumble and roar in agony before finally falling apart. Indeed the blackjack is the only truly effective weapon against them, with careful maneuvering an alerted statue can be destroyed with 4-8 strikes.

Giant Human Statue[]

In the central courtyard of a Hidden Lair can one Giant Human Statue be found that is similar to the human statue but bigger. This colossal statue stands guard, opposite to a very tempting piece of Loot that is virtually impossible to obtain without gaining its attention.

Despite his intimidating size, the giant statue is no stronger than the others and, after obtaining the Glyph of Unbinding, can be taken out with a single stealthy hit with the blackjack to the back. However, doing this can be considerably difficult as the courtyard is brighter than it seems and this statue stands in a niche when not on patrol. With careful maneuvering when alerted it can be destroyed with 4-8 strikes. An easy method is to gain his attention and allow him to follow Garrett to the edge of the ditch that encircles its area of the courtyard. There, with careful strikes, he can destroy the statue without the risk of being touched.

A bug, or perhaps design flaw, is that when Garrett crouches, he is below the attack height of the giant making the statue unable to attack him. (This does not work with the normal size statues.)

Behind the Scenes[]

  • Statues attack with invisible "swords", sometimes seen as a rectangular shadow when dropped. These, like all melee blades in Thief: Deadly Shadows, will destroy any breakable object that strikes them.
