The undead are deceased creatures that have been resurrected by unknown means. They share the same dark and grim appearance but occur in different forms like semi-spiritual manifestations (Apparitions and Fire Shadows) and in the form of rotting flesh and bones (Zombies and Haunts). They can usually be found in tombs like the Bonehoard, or in graveyards, catacombs or non-populated areas where they rest uneasy. The Undead activity is usually a massive phenomenon as they tend to wander in groups, and when one corpse has risen from death, others are likely to follow. Almost all Undead creatures have an inherent hostility towards the living, although certain non-hostile apparitions exist.
In some instances the undead seem to be a more or less natural occurrence while in other they are the result of an untimely end.[1][2] In one area of St. Edgar's Church the Pagan zombies are thought to be a result of them being overworked to dead.[3] The Undead can be summoned by practitioners of necromancy, by disturbance of their burial grounds, reading certain magical books and possibly certain powerful entities.
Hammerite View[]
It is evident that the undead are abhorrent to the Hammerites and Hammerite Guards will attack Zombies on sight.[4][5] Yet despite their claim that undeath is the consequence of a sinful life,[6][7] many Hammerites have returned from the dead as Haunts, Apparitions, and Zombies.[8] Some of these abominations may be found within sacred Hammerite territories where their graves have been desecrated or even just seem to patrol their burial place.[9][10] In one mass it is mentioned that "the mark of the Trickster is upon them".[11]
Characteristics[]
Strengths[]
The undead are horrific and quite difficult foes as they are fearless and never flee from battle. They are almost always found in great numbers and all are immune to knock-out attacks - such as Gas Arrows or Gas Mines, and blackjacking - making them dangerous and relentless enemies.
Some of them like zombies cannot be killed with conventional weapons like Swords and regular arrows but can be turned into a dormant state with it while others cannot be permanently dispatched and will always come back after they have been killed like the Fire Shadow. To permanently destroy zombies Holy Water arrows are needed, or fire based attacks like Fire Arrows or mines, or bright light like multiple Flash Bombs. The Apparition has high health and the Haunt has high speed and lightning fast attacks making back-stabbing a more preferable ways to combat these.
Weaknesses[]
Undead have a strong vulnerability to bright light attacks such as Flash Bombs, fire based attacks such as Explosive Weapons and fire arrows, backstabbing, Holy Water, and possibly special blessed weapons.
Zombies are rather slow and unaware enemies and will usually give up chase after leaving them alone for a small amount of time. Fire Shadows are extremely vulnerable to water based attacks but prove no more weaker against holy water arrows. The apparition is completely deaf what can be uses as an advantage.
Hatred Against the Living[]
As almost all undead have a hatred against the living this can be used as an advantage. For example by luring a zombie towards a Burrick will cause it to attack it and possibly even kill it.[12] They also seem to hate the Builder's Children as a Haunt in the Eastport Mechanist Seminary will attack them but cannot damage them.[13]
Peaceful Apparitions[]
Some apparitions do not seem to hate the living and are just unable to move on like Brothr Murus, Lorna or Lauryl or are in the process of passing on like the Pagan spirits in Beck o' the Wills.[14][15] [16]

Trivia[]
- A unique bone creature appears in the upper mines of Cragscleft that fires a single spectral skull projectile, and then falls apart, when encountered that is probably also a type of undead creature.[17]
- Two zombies can be seen dancing together behind a wall at Shoalsgate.[18] This could mean that some zombies have interest beyond haunting their graves or killing living creatures.
- The Book of Ash in the Necromancer's Spire will summon two zombies when read.[19]
- Some pagans have the ability to resurrect the dead but are hardly ever seen doing so.[20]
